Why reTOUCH Wired Door Chime?
A door chime may look simple from the outside, but what is inside matters.
The reTOUCH DC12DC Mechanical Door Chime features a dedicated built-in transformer that steps the 220–240V mains supply down to a lower-voltage 12V~ door chime circuit.
This means the door bell switch operates on the lower-voltage side of the transformer rather than directly on the mains supply.
The transformer and related components are supported by documented safety testing. The DC12DC has been tested to IEC 61558-2-8, the safety standard covering transformers and power supply units for bells and chimes, and is supported by a CB Test Certificate.
The reTOUCH Door Chime is also SIRIM Approved and Energy Commission (ST) Approved.
Built-In Transformer
220–240V AC → Built-In Transformer → 12V~ Door Chime Circuit
Not all wired door chimes use the same internal power design.
Some lower-cost wired door chimes may use a different design or may not include a built-in transformer. With the reTOUCH DC12DC, the dedicated transformer separates the mains supply side from the lower-voltage door chime circuit.
This is particularly relevant to the circuit connected to the door bell switch.

Door Chime FAQ
Do all wired door chimes have a built-in transformer?
No. Wired door chimes can use different internal power designs, and some models are sold without a built-in transformer.
The reTOUCH DC12DC Mechanical Door Chime includes a dedicated built-in transformer that converts the 220–240V mains supply to a lower-voltage 12V~ door chime circuit.
What is the difference between a door chime with and without a built-in transformer?
A built-in transformer allows the mains supply and the lower-voltage door chime circuit to be separated.
In the reTOUCH DC12DC, the 220–240V mains supply enters the transformer and the door chime circuit operates at 12V~ on the transformer output side.
A door chime without a built-in transformer may use a different electrical design. Therefore, consumers should not compare door chimes based only on their external appearance or price.
Why is a built-in transformer important for a door bell switch?
The door bell switch is the part of the system that people physically press and may be installed near an entrance.
With the reTOUCH DC12DC system, the built-in transformer steps the mains supply down to 12V~ for the door chime circuit.
This becomes especially relevant when considering the electrical design of a door bell installation and the location of the bell switch.
Why can wired door chime prices vary so much?
Two door chimes can look similar externally while having very different internal designs.
Differences may include:
- Power-supply design
- Whether a dedicated transformer is included
- Transformer construction
- Internal component quality
- Electrical isolation design
- Safety testing
- Certification and compliance
The reTOUCH DC12DC uses a dedicated built-in transformer and documented tested components, with safety testing to IEC 61558-2-8 supported by a CB Test Certificate.
It is also SIRIM Approved and Energy Commission (ST) Approved.
So when comparing wired door chimes, compare what is inside the product, not only the appearance and price.
What is IEC 61558-2-8?
IEC 61558-2-8 is an international safety standard covering particular requirements and tests for transformers and power supply units used for bells and chimes.
The reTOUCH DC12DC Mechanical Door Chime has been tested to IEC 61558-2-8 and is supported by a CB Test Certificate.
Is reTOUCH Door Chime SIRIM approved?
Yes. The reTOUCH DC12DC Mechanical Door Chime is SIRIM Approved and Energy Commission (ST) Approved.
Is there a reTOUCH door bell switch for outdoor use?
Yes.
reTOUCH offers a separate IP44 Door Bell Switch for locations where the switch may be exposed to moisture or outdoor conditions.
The IP44 rating applies specifically to the IP44 Door Bell Switch. It should not be interpreted as an IP44 rating for the indoor DC12DC Door Chime itself.
Does reTOUCH also have a wireless door chime?
Yes. If you prefer a wireless, battery-free solution, explore the separate reTOUCH Kinetic Door Chime range.
